After our post on pretty girly rooms, I got a lot of requests for boys room decor ideas. So here we have it, simple ideas to give your little guy a room he will love!

Boys Room Decor Ideas:

Remember how I said girly rooms need not be pink? Well, with a boys room I would actually go for blue. Here are a few good reasons why.

1) Did you know blue is the most popular colour in the world? Almost one third of the world’s population chose blue as their favourite colour. So more likely than not, your little guy will love it.

2) Blue is supposed to be good for your mind and body. It apparently slows down metabolism and produces a calming effect. Don’t we want a calm and tranquil resting place for our little ones? In fact, I think blue is great for girls’ rooms too!

3) Blue is also considered a neutral colour. Like with white, cream, grey and beige, it is easy to use any colour with blue. For example, my son’s favourite colour is red. He wanted a red room. I didn’t think a fully red room was a good idea at all. It would be anything but calming and restful. So we did his room in blue and red. Blue, as a neutral, toned down the red.  And he got a red room!

So here are some ideas I would use to make a boys room…

Use Blue:

I would go ahead and use blue. Blue looks great with most colours. This is a blue and red room, like we discussed above.

Ask your boy his favourite colour and use blue with it. It could be orange…

Or green…

Or brown… pretty much any colour he likes. Adding the blue works two ways. It works as a neutral, and adds a second colour to the room, making it more vibrant.

Of course, if he doesn’t like blue at all, don’t use it! You could use another neutral… and add some colour to that. Again, the point of using 2 colours is to add a little interest to it.

If blue is his favourite, you could also go for an all blue boys room. This one is a surefire winner!

Use Patterns Like Stripes and Checks:

Any kind of pattern helps to add more interest to a space. Imagine a blank wall, versus a striped wall. Or plain cushion covers versus checks. The patterns make it all more vibrant. And stripes and checks have ‘boy’ written all over them.

Use stripes in neutrals, like in this wallpaper.

Or in bright colours like in this bedding.

You could use striped rugs to add more pattern and texture to the room.

Or use it minimally, with a single stripe running right around the room.

Or even painted on your boy’s furniture.

Similarly, checks look great too, whether on the walls

or on the furnishings.

You could use just a hint of checks and the room looks all boy.

I love the way checks of different sizes and patterns have been used together in this bedding.

Use Sports Balls:

Most little boys like to play with balls even though they may not be passionate about any particular sport. Add sports balls to the decor to add more ‘boy’ to the room. I loved these simple, painted, sports ball signs to put on the wall.

You could use accessories with a sports ball theme like wardrobe or dresser knobs, or these awesome hooks.

Throw in a bean bag. They’re really comfortable to sit on, very easy to move around the room and you get these in sports prints too. This football bean bag is available here.

Or you could simply add baskets to the room and pile them up with different sports balls. It also helps keep the room tidy!

Another easy way to include a sports ball in the decor is to use it to monogram the room. Paint a ball on to the wall and place a cut-out letter on it.

Or paint the letter itself like a ball.

Use Super Heroes:

Boys of all ages love super heroes. Depending on how ‘little’ or not your little guy is, you can choose what you use. The little guys will love this cartoon super hero collage.

While the bigger ones would love these vintage super hero posters.

Use Mean Machines:

Boys rarely outgrow their love for their mean machines, so use them to make him a special boys room. Sailor theme rooms have been done often and are always a hit.

Every boy’s first love is a car, even if it’s a small red plastic thing he races up and down your arm. There are plenty of car wallpapers available. This pretty one is available here.
