We have been working hard on the design of the public areas of the home i.e. the living room, dining room and terrace. These aren’t really separate rooms. There is one large hall that has been divided into the living and dining areas. The living area opens out onto the terrace. Mister and Missus enjoy having friends over. So we want a space which sparkles with style and glitz, but with a warmth and grace that is immediately welcoming. The design of this space changes about once a week! But this is where we are at right now.

Living and Dining Room

Living Room:

The highlight of the living room is the large terrace that it opens onto. When you slide open the doors the living room glows with natural light and a lovely breeze blows through. The terrace becomes an extension of the living room and it is a great opportunity to get the outdoors right into the home. So instead of creating a focal wall, I have designed the seating to mainly face the terrace. We will look for a lighter design for the chairs near the sliding doors, so that there is minimal blocking of the view and light from there.

We went back and forth a lot with the bar. I thought of having a proper bar counter with bar stools, like this.

But the counter was coming in the way and intruding into the only passage to the terrace. I have now pushed the bar on to the wall. This gives us enough space to work at the bar, and also free movement to and from the terrace.

Dining Room:

The dining table fits in almost perfectly into what was originally the entrance to the flat. I say ‘almost’, because there is one eyesore in the form of a beam which runs across the dining table.

We’re figuring out how to deal with that effectively!

The Terrace:

My favourite part of the home is this terrace.

Living Room

The Family-of-5 loves the outdoors and the green. The look we’re aiming towards is of an unmanicured garden.

I had the most exciting meeting ever with Jyoti, of Nature’s Rendevouz, about this. She asked me what my vision for the project is. I told her I wanted a rain forest. And she totally got me! I thought she’d laugh and suggest taller plants. But she completely understood, and was spouting out ideas I would never have dreamed of. I cannot wait to see what she comes up with for Project Comeback!

Jyoti is the most passionate nature lover I have ever met. She has a gorgeous farm, not far from Mumbai. In just a few years she has converted it from a bare patch of red soil to a thriving green ecosystem. You can read more about the inspiring work of Nature’s Rendezvous while we wait for her design.

Rain forest is a mind blowing idea. We visited an artificially created one in Singapore, under a super super huge dome. That it can be done in a residential place, is worth the wait. With Jyoti’s passion for nature and creativity, anything is possible. All the best galz…..
