Most of us have had to deal with a small bathroom in our homes at some point. If you are a Mumbaikar like me, or stay in any big, crowded metro, your bathroom probably ends where it begins.

If you step inside your bathroom and stretch your arms on both your sides, can you touch both ends at once? (Width wise, I can touch both walls without stretching!) So here are some smart ways to make your small bathroom big. Some of these you need to think about in the planning stage of your bathroom. Others you can add on even now.

Add Space in Your Small Bathroom:

(1) Use The Corners:

Take a look at the birds eye view of this bathroom. They’ve managed to fit in so much into such a little space! The diagonal line across a room is longer than any of the sides. So putting things in opposite corners gives you more space between them. You manage to fit in more and the end result is more spacious.

Putting the basin in the corner is a great space saver. Again, because the counter goes diagonally across the walls, it has a greater length across the front while using minimal space. It is also unobtrusive because it has no corners sticking out, like a rectangular counter would.

If you put the mirror above similarly, diagonally across the walls, you can make some storage behind the mirror too.

Similarly, small corner shelves will help you organise your things and give you display space to glam up your bathroom too.

If you have a little more space, place a shelf rack in the corner. Just see how much these slender shelves can store!

(2) Use a Ledge Instead of a Counter:

Sometimes the bathroom is so narrow that there is no space for a full scale basin counter. Run a ledge along the length of the bathroom instead.

The ledge serves the same purpose as your counter, but you can make it only 6″-9″ deep, depending on the space available. Put cabinets above it over your WC, or a large mirror above the basin.

Run it along your shower area too, and you can keep all your bathing essentials on it.

It’s a very small way to add big space to your bathroom.

(3) Use the Space Above the WC:

This is a simple way to add storage space into a small bathroom at any time. You don’t have to wait for a major bathroom makeover to add shelves above your WC.

Or get some wire or cane baskets and just hang them on the wall above for an instant storage solution.

A storage rack around the WC is very pretty and can multiply your storage space.

(4) Use the Space Above the Bathroom Door:

The space above the bathroom door is generally completely wasted. Add a shelf above the door for storage of items you don’t need on an everyday basis.

You can also used closed storage with shutters if you prefer.

(5) Make Storage Space Behind The Mirror:

Every bathroom has a mirror. Why not use it well? Add a storage cabinet behind your mirror. It helps to clear up all the small bottles and brushes from your counter. A clutter free basin versus a crowded one… guess which one will look bigger?

This sliding storage behind the mirror is a great idea too!

(6) Use the Space on the Side of the Counter:

Your basin counter vertical is a great place to use for storage. You can fix your tissue paper holder or towel rod here.

Or a basket to hold hair dryers, towels, or even a book to read.

(7) Finish Up With Large Mirrors:

Now that you’ve used every possible space in your small bathroom to create big storage, all that’s left is to actually make the bathroom look big. The best way to do this is with large mirrors.

Mirrors literally double the visual space. Use large mirrors on the basin counter and as wall paneling to make the bathroom look double in width and length.

This is my bathroom, the one I can touch from mirror to door without stretching my hands. Thanks to the large mirror, it doesn’t look that small!

So these are 7 easy and smart ways to make a small bathroom work for you.  Even a couple of them might make a big difference. For example, this bathroom uses a ledge behind the basin counter and WC, with a large mirror which has storage behind it. Neat, isn’t it?
