This is a completely unplanned post, because I hadn’t planned on decorating our entrance with Christmas garland at all. It started with my son looking over my shoulder when I was browsing through Pinterest. He saw some gorgeous wreaths and asked if we too could have a wreath at home. That’s a simple enough request, right? All I had to do was go and buy a wreath… I readily agreed.

So last week I went to Crawford Market and picked up a gorgeous, ready made wreath. That was the easy part. To stop at the wreath.. that was difficult. There were so many pretty things in Christmas stalls along both sides of the road. I just could NOT stop myself. I ended up with the garland and loads of Christmas ornaments… and the rest, as they say, is history. In this case.. this post!

How To Decorate A Christmas Garland:

So here is what I started off with.. I got myself a 9 foot long Christmas garland and lots of silver and gold balls, pine cones and star ornaments. Something new that I picked up, that I’ve never used before, is the roll of silver pearl string you can see in the bottom right corner. You can also see the ready made wreath there. It is green, silver and gold, so I decided to keep the same tones on the garland too.

This was the first time I decorated a Christmas garland, so there was some trial and error involved. But it turned out really pretty in the end, which is why I decided to write this post.

If you are planning to decorate your home for Christmas, you must consider a garland. It is such a large piece of decor that it instantly fills up your entrance / room / window and makes the whole space look like Christmas. And with this post, you will realise how easy it is to use.

(1) Hang The Christmas Garland:

The garland has a wire base which makes it really easy to twist into shape and hang ornaments on. But it’s difficult to put the garland up without a hook. Initially I thought I would just tape it up, like I did with my fairy lights and all other Diwali decor. But the garland is too heavy for that. Luckily I have hooks for my planters on both sides of the entrance. I twisted the garland around the hook on both sides and it stayed up. If you look carefully, you’ll see some duct tape I’ve put in the center to hold the garland up there. But that tends to slip off. I will need another hook there too, to keep the garland up.

If you are planning to decorate a door, put a hook on each side and it should be enough. If you are doing a longer window or wall, you’ll need a hook in the centre to keep the garland up. Or you could let it swag slightly in the centre and that looks really pretty too.

The 9 feet of garland was neatly wrapped and tied up, with all the leaves flat against each other. So after hooking it up I opened out all the leaves so that they spread all around instead of flat and in one line.

(2) Add The Pearl String:

The pearl string truly was a good buy. It is about 25 to 30 feet long. I  started at one end of the Christmas garland and looped it at varying lengths and heights along the entire length. It was long enough for me to turn it around at the other end and come all the way back to where I started.

It is very easy to hang anything on the garland because the little branches have a wire base. So all you have to do is hang the string or ornament on to one of the stems and then bend the wire up a little, and the ornament stays hooked on.

The garland is of a fixed width, from one end to the other. But with the pearl string at varying heights, I managed to add another dimension to the arrangement. I kept it a little longer at both ends and the centre. So the the pearl string has been laid out sort of symmetrically, but not an exact mirror image of the opposite side.

(3) Add The Ornaments:

I picked up my silver and gold ornaments and took 1 box at a time. There were 9 golden balls and I started with them first. I spread them evenly along the entire length of the garland, 4 on each side and 1 around the centre. Then I took the silver balls, divided them into 2 and did the same. I did that with the pine cones too, varying the heights of all the ornaments along the way. This way, each ornament was roughly evenly distributed along the entire length of the garland.

(4) Add The Snowflakes:

I finally added the snow flakes to complete the garland.

I had them in 3 different sizes and I distributed these evenly along the garland to give it a dreamy, snowy look.

Finally, I hung the wreath on the door and our entrance is ready. There is a slight gap between the gold jaali and the door, and if you look carefully you can see the black strings I’ve used to tied the wreath through the jaali. I’ve used one string on either side on top and a single one at the bottom to keep the wreath firmly in place.

Our door has this antique gold jaali and a brass handle which gives it an Indian decor look. Which is why I chose the gold and green wreath. It goes well with the door and does not look out of place. And now the Christmas garland goes well with this too.
