Today’s post makes me quite proud of myself, because I have made this colourful confetti tray using not one, but 2 waste items lying at home. So let me tell you how this confetti tray came in to being.

DIY Colourful Confetti Tray

Some time back I got a box full of goodies from CraftedIndia. As much as I love their products, I also fell completely in love with their packing material. (A special shout out to them for using environmentally friendly material and not going the plastics / bubble wrap / thermocol way.) That box full of colourful confetti was soooo pretty, I couldn’t get myself to throw it. Yes, I can get like that some times! I kept the confetti knowing I would use it somewhere, some time.

Then a few weeks back I got that grey wooden tray with some other stuff. It is a perfectly good tray, large, solid and made of wood. Only it’s painted in that boring grey colour which says ‘packaging material’ all over it. But I immediately knew what I was going to do with the box of confetti I had stored.

DIY Colourful Confetti Tray:

Yup, I put the 2 together to make this beautiful tray. I even had that leftover gold paint lying at home from the plastic plant pots I had painted. So the only thing I actually bought for this DIY is 2 packets of glitter! But let’s take it a step at a time…

What I Used:

DIY Colourful Confetti Tray

  • A wooden tray
  • That beautiful confetti
  • Mod Podge
  • Gold paint and a brush
  • Silver and gold glitter

(1) Paint The Tray Rim:

The confetti would go on the base of the tray and the grey rim would make a dull border for it. I wanted to brighten up the border. Since I had the gold paint, I painted a single coat on all 3 sides of the rim of the tray. You can see a bit of grey through that 1 coat, but I liked that look so I didn’t paint a second coat.

(2) Cut The Confetti:

I grabbed hold of a bunch of confetti and realised that these strips are just too long to use as is.

So I took a scissor and just started chopping away at it. I did quite a lot of cutting.. almost an hour of it.. before I had shredded enough for the tray.

(3) Apply Mod Podge On The Tray:

I poured some Mod Podge on the tray and spread it with a brush. I did a small area at a time so that it didn’t all dry up.

(4) Sprinkle Confetti On The Mod Podge:

I sprinkled the confetti on the Mod Podge and flattened down as much as I could with my finger tip.

I continued like this till the whole tray was done and then left it to dry overnight.

(5) Mix The Glitter:

I poured a little bit of the silver and gold glitter into a small box and shook it to mix it up.

(6) Pour Another Layer Of Mod Podge:

As you can see in the pic, not all of the confetti has flattened down against the surface of the tray. Some of it is still sort of standing up. So the second layer of Mod Podge I poured was much thicker. The idea was to drown all that confetti under it and seal it all in. Again, I did small areas at a time, spreading the Mod Podge with my brush and flattening the confetti against the bottom of the tray along the way.

(7) Sprinkle Glitter:

As I drowned out the confetti in each section, I sprinkled the glitter mixture on it, before moving on to the next section.

I continued this till the whole tray was done. This is a really thick layer of Mod Podge, so again I left it to dry overnight.

As the Mod Podge dries, it becomes transparent again and the confetti and glitter show through beautifully. That’s it, the tray is done. If the confetti is still sticking out a little, you can easily spread another layer of Mod Podge to drown it under completely.

(8) Your Confetti Tray Is Ready!

There are so many ways in which you can use this pretty tray. The most obvious, use it as a serving tray.

The Mod Podge is a sealant and small water spills shouldn’t matter. You can wipe down the tray with a wet cloth to clean it instead of washing it under a tap.

Use it as a jewelry tray.

It’s a great way to organise jewelry in your wardrobe.

Trays are very useful to use on your tables too. Use it to style your centre table.

Or on your bedside table to keep your book, phone and other trinkets in one place.

Here’s a short video of the making of this confetti tray.

As you can see, this is a really simple DIY craft. You could even have your kids doing this over the summer vacations. These trays are great for personal use or for gifting. So give it a shot and let me know how it goes!

Until next time,

Great idea. Best from waste is surely the way forward. Would appreciate a separate piece on different agents to be used for binding different materials like leather, plastic and so on. Where is Mod podge available? Is it a brand name?
