I made ribbon bunting as a solution to a small problem. Recently we completed Doll’s room. Though I was happy with most of the room, this was really getting to me.

There was this blank space above the soft board which was, well, just too blank! It looked kind of empty and incomplete… which is the main reason her room reveal is not on the blog yet… and I was wondering what to do with it. I started browsing around for inspiration, including looking up my old posts. Yes, I do look at my own posts too, for inspiration from time to time! And I found this photograph in my post on Colourful Home Decor.

I thought this would be a perfect solution to that empty space, and I got right to it.

How to Make Ribbon Bunting:

(1) Select Your Material:

Do you remember this green wallpaper we had selected for Doll’s room? We had quite a bit of this roll left.

I thought I’d cut the paper into strips and use it on the bunting. It helps to tie the bunting in with the rest of the decor and it’s good use of the wallpaper. It also gave me somewhere to start.

As you can see in the room photograph above, we’ve used a tiny bit of pink to add some colour into the otherwise jungle themed room. I tried some pink ribbon with the green wallpaper and I thought it was perfect.

Now we had strips of green wallpaper and long strips of green and pink ribbon. I also needed a long string onto which I would tie all these strips. I picked up some drawstring which was lying at home. You can also use any kind of rope or twine.

(2) Cut Your Material In Strips:

I cut the wallpaper and ribbon into strips of equal length.

It looked pretty good. Till I remembered this previous post on girly room decor. It said, to make pretty girl rooms, use something soft, add something sweet and a little bit of something shiny. I found some silver ribbon in my stash and cut that too. This was much better.

(3) Cut and Mark the Drawstring:

Cut out the drawstring as per the length of your ribbon bunting. Remember to keep extra length on both sides to tie it up! Mark the centre of the drawstring only if you like to work from the centre outwards. I did because I wanted the long wallpaper strip in the centre and then worked out both ways from there. Mark the ends so that you know where to stop.

(4) Add the Strips:

For the paper strips, slide the strip below the drawstring so it comes out one end by about an inch. Put Fevicol on the small end and the drawstring.

Fold the inch of paper over to stick it. While the Fevicol is wet, the paper tends to open out, so I put a little Cello tape to hold it in place till it dries.

It is quite hopeless to try to stick ribbon with Fevicol. Tie little knots with the ribbons to add these to the drawstring.

You can tie the ribbons in any random order or put them in a sequence. I made a small sequence of all the ribbons I had and kept repeating it till the end.

This was the ribbon bunting after 2 repetitions of the sequence.

(5) Trim the Ends:

Add ribbons to the drawstring till the desired length is done. Now your bunting is ready. But it’s always the details which make the difference between good and great! The ribbon edges on top tend to look a little messy.

Fold and cut a little ‘V’ to neaten it up.

Repeat the same at the bottom.

It fills up that space nicely and softens up all the straight lines all around it.

Here’s a short video with all the steps in it.

And we’ll be ready for Doll’s room reveal on the blog next week!

Until next time,
