I was browsing through Pinterest a few days back and saw some beautiful pom-pom decor pics. They looked pretty, light and breezy… very with the summer decor theme I’m into these days. So I thought I should try them out myself. Turns out they are as easy as they are pretty. So here is how to make tissue paper pom-poms because it’s such a simple way to give your home a festive look for any occasion at all.

How To Make Tissue Paper Pom-Poms:

I chose to make white tissue paper pom-poms… mainly because I’m absolutely loving white this season. Also because I had loads of white party tissue lying at home. 😉 So let’s get straight into it.

This is the teeny-tiny list of stuff you’ll need to make these pretty pom-poms.

  • Stacks of party tissue.. any colour at all will do. Match it to the rest of your decor
  • Scissors
  • Crafting Wire
  • Nylon string.. or ribbon.. or any kind of string you’d like to tie up your pom-poms with
  • Baubles to suspend from the pom-poms (entirely optional)

(1) Stack Up The Tissue Paper:

Unfold the tissue paper and start stacking up the papers one on top of the other. I made pom-poms in 2 sizes with 2 types of tissue paper. One was double ply, in which case I used a stack of 10 sheets of tissue paper. The second was single ply tissue, where I made a stack of 15 sheets.

(2) Fan Fold:

Once you have your tissue paper neatly stacked up, start making fan folds in the paper from one end to the other.

(3) Tie It Up:

Once the entire stack is folded, use crafting wire to tie it up it the centre.

(4) String It Up:

I tied a long piece of nylon string to the wire. Make sure both the ends of the string are long. I tied little Christmas tree ornaments to one end of the string, so that they hang below the pom-pom. I used the other end of the string to hang the pom-pom.

(5) Cut ‘Petals’:

Cut small ‘U’s’ into both the ends of the fan folded tissue to give them a petal-like finish. It doesn’t have to be perfect. You can even cut a ‘V’ instead of a ‘U’, but the cuts make the edges uneven and give it a floral look.

The entire stack was too thick to cut through in one go, so I picked up a couple of folds at a time and cut the ‘U’ into each one separately.

(6) Open The Fan:

After you finish cutting both ends, open out the folds of the fan on both sides.

(7) Separate The Sheets:

Start separating each sheet of tissue by pulling away, a sheet at a time, from the ends towards the centre. This has to be done very gently as the tissue tears easily. Yet, if it isn’t pulled far enough towards the centre, there will be a gap left in there, between the tissues of both sides, and then the pom-pom doesn’t look like a complete ball.

Give it a good shake once you’ve opened it all, and your pom-pom is ready.

(8) Tie Your Bauble:

I tied little silver stars or silver balls to one of the 2 ends of the string which I had tied in Step 4.

(9) Hang Your Pom-Pom:

The other end of the same string, I used to hang the tissue paper pom-poms from the lights above my dining table.

(10) You’re Set!

That’s it.. you’re ready. How easy was that!?

I used my dining lights. You can hang them from doors / windows / the ceiling / above your table / to make a cute corner / make a backdrop against the wall…. The possibilities are endless.

I’ve put them above my dining table and I think they’re looking quite dreamy out there.

Sometimes it’s easier to understand what to do by watching a video rather than just photographs. Here you go, in case you want to watch it step by step…

Now, what I noticed is that since the lights are above the pom-poms, the light is reflecting upwards from the pom-poms towards the ceiling. The table directly below the pom-poms has a shadow on it.. because of the tissue paper pom-poms. This means if I put candles or fairy lights on the table below the pom-poms they will glow beautifully because there is no direct light on them.

Are you getting where my mind is headed? I’m absolutely loving this space and can see a lot more potential in here…

Which means you’ll probably get a follow up post on this next week… so watch out for more!

Until then…
