Most of us have seen the paint ad which says, “Har ghar kuchh kehta hai“. (Every home has a story to tell). Wall decor is the most emphatic narrator of that story. When you choose the furniture and furnishings in your home, your brain plays a larger part in your selection than your heart. You might love that delicate white fabric for your sofa. But you imagine your kids jumping around on it, and immediately pick a darker colour. When it comes to wall decor, you let your heart sing its song.

Once in a while, though, we tell our hearts to stop singing. That fancy piece of artwork or sculpture that you like is just too expensive. You definitely don’t have time for that DIY. And those awesome pics you saw on Pinterest are designer homes… impossible to do yourself.

Wall Decor Ideas:

Well, here are 7 really easy and inexpensive wall decor ideas to get that glamourous look in your home.

(1) Use Photographs:

All those beautiful photographs you’ve got stashed into albums and various folders in your computer… it’s time to take them out. This is your personal art… all about you, and completely free! And I’m not talking about just 1 or 2. Pull out a handful of them, depending on the size of the wall you want to cover.

What I like best about this is the flexibility it offers. You could frame the photographs individually in identical frames and line them up to fill up the wall.

Or you could use frames of different sizes, colours and styles and mix them up.

This is also very useful on unusually shaped asymmetric walls…

… and even around corners.

If you’re unsure about how to arrange all those frames, you can buy ready collage sets and use them. This pair of frames in my home makes one of my favourite walls. I like to change the photographs every few months and keep it fresh.

Frames like the ones below are easily available online.

(2) Use Old Calenders and Postcards:

I had this calender with gorgeous Ganesh images in watercolour. I cut out each image and got them framed as a set. They make another beautiful wall in my home.

You could also use a collection of postcards or posters that you have. Here they’ve chosen postcards of one theme and colour scheme, and framed all of them, irrespective of the size and orientation, in an identical frame. This unifies them beautifully into a single wall display.

Framing a collection of magazine covers for wall decor is a super idea!

(3) Use Old Saris:

While you are rummaging through your stores, take a look at your saris too. You have that old favourite sari which snagged on a nail and has a little tear? Or that really gorgeous wedding sari which you can never wear because it’s just too heavy. Use them to dress up your walls. If you have a large blank wall, or a high ceiling, you could hang the entire length of the sari like tapestry.

Or just a part of it, like a gorgeous ‘pallu‘.

Or frame your favourite bits like different motifs and borders to make a stunning collage.

You can similarly use embroidered dupattas or delicately woven shawls.

(4) Mirrors:

A large, full length mirror in a lavish frame will always be a show stopper, but might also be expensive.

Source

But you can use mirrors economically with similar effect. Instead of 1 large mirror, take smaller frames of different shapes and sizes and put them together. This is especially great in a smaller room as it adds width and makes the room look larger.

Get more adventurous and use circular frames, or any other shape you like.

Or mix up all the different shapes you have and that’s an awesome wall too!

(5) Fairy Lights:

Fairy lights are cheap, easily available anywhere and always give a festive and glamorous feeling to any space. You can just hang strings of light like a curtain along a wall, and the space instantly sparkles.

Source

Use the lights to spell out a word. This could be your name in your bedroom, an inspirational word in your family room or your family’s motto in your entryway!

Add fairy lights to one of the other methods used above and glam it up further. For instance, hanging photographs on your string of fairy lights.

Or mixing up lights and mirrors. This installation of strings of small mirrors looks dazzling with the fairy lights.

(6) Baskets:

Baskets are affordable and very easily available, but rarely used as wall decor. You could use neutral tones and keep a monochromatic scheme. This looks sophisticated and easily blends with whatever colour you decide to use in your room.

Or you could have a more fun look by using baskets of different colours.

Source

Just like a photo gallery, these can be used very flexibly. You can do walls of different shapes, sizes and you can keep adding to your collection of baskets as you go along.

If you use larger baskets, you could place a plant in them too, and that gives a totally new look to your wall!

(7) Plants:

Plants, again, are easily available, inexpensive and we use them all over our homes. But we rarely think of them as wall decor. If you are a green-lover, use them on your walls too!

Install some basic shelves on your walls and place plants on them.

Or restyle an entire unit just with plants.

You can also make a collage of wall planters and make a lovely green wall.
