Most of everyone I know loves their television but hates the way it looks on the wall. But unless you decide to do away with it all together, (which I think is a great idea) you do have to put it up on the wall. You not only just have to put it up, it usually occupies the centre space at eye level, making it the focal point. Every time I start designing a TV unit I’m thinking, ‘That’s another big black ugly box that I have to glorify.’ So when a reader suggested a post on TV unit ideas, I wondered why I hadn’t written this one earlier.

11 Terrific TV Unit Ideas:

Here, today, are some of my favourite TV unit ideas. I use some of these all the time, with slight changes depending on the space and finishes we’re using. Others I would love to try myself. So let’s get right to it.

(1) Keep It Simple:

Think tiny room in a small apartment and simple works really well. You usually need a shelf for the set top box and other accessories, and not much else. If required you can provide for some storage below.

We used this simple unit in our Garden Style Vintage bedroom, where we had another focal wall and didn’t want to bring any attention to this wall or the television. The simple shelf under the television is a convenient place to park all the little extras that usually lay scattered around the room.

Better still, use a regular console or side board under the TV instead of a TV unit. That way the focus shifts more on the console and other decor elements rather than the television.

You could mount the television on the wall as you would art above your sideboard. (Imagine that painting is a TV. Yes, it would be big, black and ugly. But the decor around it would shift your focus from it.)

If you do mount your television above a sideboard, remember not to use a very high unit so that the television remains at eye level.

(2) A Panel Behind The Television:

If your television wall is the focus of the room then you might want to bring in some additional design element to it. A simple panel behind the TV is a great way to do that. This also helps when you want to break the monotony of a very long wall.

Do you remember how we used a wallpaper clad panel behind our TV in our Guest Bedroom?

(3) Add Some Shelves:

If you want some display to go with your TV unit, adding simple shelves will take care of it. I love how they’ve used light shelves against a dark panel here, with the concealed lights highlighting the texture of the panel so beautifully.

(4) Add A Display Unit:

A lot of the points mentioned above have been layered along with each other to make this pretty TV unit display wall. A simple shelf below the TV with a panel behind it. In this case they’ve used a beautiful white brick texture.

The display panels on either side are also simple, straight lines and a great way to add some curios and a touch of greens into the living room.

Though I usually prefer simpler units (they are easier on the eye in small apartments) I loved this jigsaw puzzle type unit I came across on Pinterest. It goes across the room with shelves of various shapes and sizes fitting into each other perfectly. The television neatly fits into one of the many sections.

What I really liked about it is how the TV is almost camouflaged into this unit and doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb.

(5) Use a Dark Wall:

If you like the idea of camouflaging the TV, the easiest way to do it is by placing it against a dark wall.

This simple unit in straight lines makes such a stunning statement in this room.

Here’s another simple, stunning TV wall with the television merging against the black colour and simple units on either side completing the look.

(6) Make a Gallery Wall:

Another great way to take the focus away from your television is to use a gallery wall behind it.

Or even make your television a part of the gallery wall itself.

(7) Use A Wall Drape:

Remember how we used this wall drape to hide all the electrical boxes in Em’s Rental Living Room?

How about using that concept as one of our TV unit ideas? Use a Roman blind instead of a plain drape and you can conceal the television when not in use and easily display it when required.

(8) Conceal It With Artwork:

See this console with art displayed above it?

What if you could slide the artwork open whenever required to display your TV?

Here’s another example of that.

(9) Conceal The TV Under A Mirror:

A mirror panel on a wall always looks great. Just as with artwork, you can use mirrors to conceal your television when not in use.

(10) Conceal The TV In A Table:

I absolutely loved this innovative DIY I found on Pinterest. That’s a simple enough table at first sight, right?

Except that it conceals a television that can be easily put away when not in use!

(11) Use A TV Lift:

A motorised TV lift is a great way to fit your television into your living room without having it in your face all the time. The television slides into the side board when not in use and can be raised at the push of a button for viewing.

You can use the same mechanism to fit it into the foot of your bed too!
