Introducing a new project we’ve been working on for a while now, our Mid Century Modern Home. It is a large, spacious and airy home higher up in the sky than I have ever been other than when in an airplane! It belongs to a graceful couple and their two adult sons, and here today is the first space of this beautiful home that we will walk through. Our all white kitchen.

All White Kitchen - Part 1

Plan

As you can see from this plan, we had a large kitchen to start with. Just outside was a good sized dry area which we decided to include into the kitchen, making it larger still. So now we have a kitchen roughly divided into two areas, the main kitchen and the utility area.

The Main Kitchen

This is what our main kitchen area currently looks like. We have counters on both sides and a door at the far end which leads into the dry area. The plan is to break down the wall to the left of the door so that the utility area becomes a part of the kitchen.

We can then push the sink further down and have a larger cooking counter. We also place the refrigerator on this side, and here is a rendering of what the left side of our kitchen will look like.

Since we have enough storage on the left, we decided to give the right side a lighter look. A tall unit which takes care of all our appliances, after which there’s space to fit in a breakfast counter for a quick bite on the way to work or a family day cooking together.

We also thought we’d make our breakfast corner pretty. That’s another reason to not cram up this wall with storage. We’re leaving it open with a shelf running across the wall and some art work to go under it. Here’s what the right side looks like in our render.

The Utility Area

As you enter the utility area you face a large window which lets in the air and light into the kitchen. On the right is a large empty wall except for these pipes running along it.

The plan is to use this space to keep the second, larger fridge and the washing machine and dryer. We want to cover those ugly pipes but can’t seal them since they must be accessible for repairs. So we’ll cover these with shutters that will give us a backdrop of a plain ‘wall’ and yet can be opened when required.

The refrigerator comes on the right hand corner of this wall. We’d like to place the washing machine and dryer side by side like this.

But there is a small chance, depending on the size of the fridge, that they may not fit in side by side. Then the plan is to stack them up like this.

All White Kitchen

Once the plan is taken care of, we move to the finishes. Our couple was very clear they wanted an all white kitchen. They also thought a wooden floor would look good with the white and I wholly agreed. Wood always helps to warm up any space and an all white space will definitely need some warmth to it.

We’ve selected a beautiful white stone to go on the counter and walls, along with the all white kitchen cabinets. So we thought we’d break the monotony of the white with a highlight tile going behind the chimney.

We could do this either by going with another white tile to add pattern and break the monotony of the plain white stone.

Or use the highlighter to add a hint of another colour.

Our clients loved a little bit of grey to go with the white and so selected a floor tile in a greyish wood tone along with a grey mosaic highlighter.

Breakfast Counter

In keeping with the sleek, modern look of the kitchen, we thought we’d give it a waterfall breakfast bar. The wooden top will start just above the counter with it’s edge extending vertically over the floor.

Only, our breakfast bar is at a right angle to the kitchen counter and not along its length. It will be long enough to seat two people.

Which leaves us with the final selection for our all white kitchen, the pendant lights above the counter.

We are yet to select these, and are vacillating between a bold fitting that makes a statement…

… and something more simple and elegant to blend into the interiors.

Both of them look beautiful, don’t they? So which one would you go with? Let me know what you think, coz I sure could use some help here.

It’s the last bit of this all white kitchen that needs to be finalised. Other than that we’re set and ready to go. Sign up here to see how this kitchen finally turns out, because I’ll be back with the update as soon as it is ready.

Until next time,
