Designing this garden style vintage bedroom has been an unusually fun experience. How it usually works is, the client gives me a brief to start with. This includes their requirements and style preference. I then work on a presentation with various ideas for the room. I usually use lots of inspiration photos in the presentation, which helps the client to picturise what I’m talking about. And I can be sure we’re both picturising the same thing!

With Krishna, the design brief was very clear. To repeat a few lines from her kitchen intro post… “Krishna loves her greys. She’s been dreaming of a Scandinavian style home in greys, whites and lots of light pinewood”. And that’s what I offered her in the presentation.

The Plan:

That’s quite a simple plan we have there. A bed, wardrobes and TV unit. Krishna also wanted a study table in her room, so we replaced one of the bedside tables with a study.

The Colours:

Grey is a pretty, soft, neutral for a bedroom. I suggested she could add a subtle hint of another soft colour to make things a little more interesting. This could be a mauve, like in this pic

Or a peach like this one.

The Style:

We were aiming at simple straight lines and I loved this wardrobe design. It’s so very simple, yet those handles make it look so stylish. Krishna liked the idea and we were gradually finalising the design.

She showed me this pic she had saved on Pinterest… “Can we do wallpaper like that?”

“Yes, of course.” You get such beautiful textures and finishes in wallpaper these days.

She said she’d seen a Krsnaa Mehta wallpaper recently which she really liked. I turned around and started searching on my computer.

“Show me which one”, I said.

This one!

Stunned silence. I looked at the wallpaper and then at her.

“Krishna, why are we designing a Scandinavian room for you if you like this wallpaper?”

The meeting ended right there. All previous design ideas were scrapped. We had no idea what we were going to do in that room anymore, except that it would involve that wallpaper.

I LOVE that wallpaper.. and I was so excited to be able to design a room around it. She loved the wallpaper too, and luckily didn’t require much convincing to use it.

A Garden Style Vintage Bedroom:

And that is how a simple, straightforward, Scandinavian room became a garden style vintage bedroom, in the blink of an eye! One element that remained predominant in both plans was the use of white. The Krsnaa Mehta wallpaper is a stunner and will definitely take centre stage in this room, so the rest of the furniture needs to be quieter.

We liked something like this for the wardrobes. The straight lines keep the design simple and the small mirror panels add the vintage charm.

We also want a lighter headboard for the bed. A big, solid headboard will only hide that beautiful wallpaper behind it. A cutwork again gives a vintage touch and will also allow the wallpaper to show through.

We haven’t figured it all out yet, but things are falling in place. The wallpaper is up and looks beautiful, but much of the furniture is yet to come.

I am really excited about getting this garden style vintage bedroom ready and sharing it with you.. let’s hope that happens soon!

Until then,
