Today we’re introducing a sweet little makeover we’re doing for a little girl’s bedroom. The exciting part is that this is my first little girl’s bedroom makeover in a long time and I’m really looking forward to creating a fantastical, wonderous space. The challenge is that this is a rental makeover. This means that we can’t make any permanent changes and it doesn’t make sense to overspend.

Keeping this in mind, we started planning out this room.

Little Girl's Bedroom - A Rental Makeover

The Room:

Luckily, except for the built-in wardrobes, the room is a blank slate. The wardrobes are to the right, adjacent to the entrance door of the room. Though we don’t particularly like the bits of pink on that wardrobe, there isn’t much to complain about.

This is what you see when you stand at the entrance door.

Exactly opposite the door and the wardrobes is a large window that lights up the room well. Above the window we have the AC unit with exposed ducting which we can’t do much about. Trying to conceal it will be permanent and expensive work which doesn’t make sense in a rental. So we’re going to pretend we can’t see it!

What we will do, is change those drapes to something softer and prettier to go with the room. I love the little pom poms on this shower curtain and would love to add a touch of those to this room. Maybe we’ll manage to draw attention away from the ugly ducting and it won’t seem like such an eyesore any more.

In the far right corner is the entrance to the washroom. We have blank walls on the right and left, along which we planned our room.

The Plan:

Our little girl is a spunky, confident 6 year old who pretty much knows what she wants. This makes it so much easier for us to design her room, than having to wonder what might make her happy.

For instance, she was certain she wanted a bunk bed. This fit in perfectly with mommy’s plans too as she also wanted to use this as a guest room when required. Mommy wanted us to provide bigger bed at the bottom, which could sleep 2 people… something like this. The bed fit in neatly along the bathroom side wall.

This gave us the opposite side to fit in everything else.

The study table fits in neatly near the window. This also gives her ample natural light to work in. We’ll give her a soft board and a white board for all her art work, reminders etc.

We’ve planned a couple of book shelves because she loves her books and already has quite a collection.

An interesting thing mommy told us is that she is quite a performer and loves to sing on her toy mic. We thought we’d make her a little ‘stage’ for her performances. Something like this.

The curtain can be easily done with a small wood pelmet we can fix into the wall and some pretty sheer fabric to drape around it.

Instead of the wooden platform we’ll demarcate the ‘stage’ area with a floor rug. Some throw cushions will also make it a comfortable floor sitting when she is not ‘performing’.

Little Girl’s Bedroom Makeover:

Once the furniture and layout has been decided, what’s left is the colours and finishes. Here too, our little girl helped us. Her favourite colour is blue… and that took care of that.

I was so expecting ‘pink’ that the blue was a pleasant surprise. If you’ve read our post on making ‘Dashing Rooms For Little Boys‘, you might remember that we listed 3 good reasons to use blue. One of them was that it can be considered a neutral. Like white, grey or beige you can add pretty much any colour to blue and it will look great. So we gave our little girl options to choose from.

Blue and pink, for instance make a very pretty combination.

Blue and green can be vibrant or soft depending on the shades you choose.

Blue and purple is as pretty and girly as it gets.

And blue and yellow is a happy sunshine room all the way.

Here too, our dilemma was easily solved. Our little girl’s current favourite is ‘Frozen’ by Disney. She selected this wallpaper for her room, and the colour scheme for our room was set.

So the plans are ready, the colour scheme is set and we’re well on our way to getting this pretty room ready for this sweet girl. I’m looking forward to get you the completed makeover of this little girl’s bedroom soon. Remember to sign up before you leave, so that you don’t miss the reveal!

(Psst… This room is now ready. Click here to see how it turned out!)

Until then,

Hi! The completed room looks lovely. I’m hoping to re design my 7 year old’s room as well and these ideas will come in handy. I wanted to ask you where can I get the Disney wallpaper you have used in this room. She loves the lavender and blue combo and it’ll be helpful if you can point me to a website where it is available. Many thanks!

I didn’t get this one from a website.. got it from my Asian Paints wallpaper vendor. You can probably get it online too… just do a Google search. And let me know how the room turns out! 🙂

Looks like a very attractive plan Ritt. Young and girl child like, yet not in the predictable pink zone.
Looking forward to the completion and reveal if this project too.
