Now that we’re past the small and striking foyer, let’s step into the living and dining room of Vivid.

Living and Dining of Vivid

One look at the space, and you’ll realise that this one is about its simplicity. We have simple geometric shapes with rectangles, squares and circles. It’s the vivid green and gold against the deep wood tone of the redwood veneer, that makes the space come alive.

The Plan

As you step in from the foyer, the kitchen is on the left and the dining area to the right. We have a sideboard near the kitchen door, which makes the bar. Another sideboard on the far end of the dining table serves as a crockery unit.

The living area lies beyond the dining. A comfortable three seater sofa with additional chairs and stools around it make a cozy conversational circle. The television comes on the wall opposite the sofa.

The Dining Area

As you step into the living and dining of Vivid, you see the kitchen door immediately to your left. The only obvious space for the dining area was opposite the kitchen door.

We placed the seating on two sides of the dining table instead of all around it. This prevents the chairs on the two ends from obstructing the entryway into the foyer, and hitting the crockery cabinet on the other end of the table.

Similarly, we didn’t want the dining chairs blocking the passage into the bedrooms. So instead of using chairs on both sides of the table, we used a bench along the wall. This allows us to push the dining table closer to the wall, leaving the passageway open.

We designed a wooden bar unit with dramatic black stripes to go on the wall near the kitchen. Proximity to the kitchen makes it easier to reach in for any requirements, especially since we don’t have a separate bar fridge here.

On the opposite side of the dining table, we have a similar cross pattern on the shutters of the crockery unit. This one though, made just with the positioning of the veneer, is far more subtle than the striking black lines of the bar unit.

The Living Area

Beyond the dining, we have the living area.

On one side there is a large three seater sofa. There are elegant accent chairs on either side, with lower stools next to them so as not to block the view of the television.

They round coffee table seems to bring them all together into a cozy seating circle.

Opposite the sofa, a handsome TV unit makes the base below the television.

Look and Feel

It all started with this beautiful rug. I love how it’s so intricately patterned, yet almost looks like a solid because of only the gentle variation in the shades of green.

I also love how the green is a subtle, neutral colour and not an in-your-face, over-the-top, loud green.

Next came the vivid green sofa. The clients quite emphatically wanted a darker colour on the sofa, especially because they have two little kids at home. A darker colour helps camouflage everyday spots and stains.

The two largest surfaces being green, I thought was enough green for this room. So we went with creams and beiges on everything else. The sheer curtains are a gentle off-white with a floral motif in grey and yellow embroidered on the curtains.

We have patterns in off white and beige on both, the arm chairs and the stools, with a hint of green for continuity on the chairs. The emerald cushions on the chairs help to sprinkle some green into the living room, beyond the sofa.

TV wall - Vivid

The TV wall is simple, with the deep wood tones of the home carrying through to the TV unit.

The gold accents are most prominent in the dining area, with the gold pendant lights and the hammered metal wall plates.

And yet, we have used black accents in the bar corner. I think it helps prevent the gold from becoming overpowering and blingy.

What I love most about this wall, is that the photographs have been clicked by the clients on their vacations. We had them printed and framed to make this striking gallery wall that is personal and meaningful to them.

The gold accents also carry through to the living area with that lovely golden wall clock above the television…

In addition, you’ll see a smattering of gold in the little things like the planters and the coffee table legs.

Before and Afters

Nothing brings together an entire space like before and afters, and so here are a few from the living and dining of Vivid.

The dining corner…

Resplendent in vivid wood and gold tones.

The sofa wall…

… is just as striking in green and gold!

A view of the dining area…

The dining table is on centre stage. The bar unit comes to the right, conveniently placed near the kitchen. The crockery unit is on the left of the dining table.

A view of the entire living and dining areas…

The dining area is tucked away to the left, in front of the kitchen, while the living area is spread across on the other side, along the large windows.
