We’ve seen the entrance and foyer of Taru and had a seat in its living and dining space. It’s time to take a look at the bedrooms now. There are four in all so we’ll take them one at a time. Today, we’ll start with the master bedroom of Taru.

Master Bedroom of Taru

The master bedroom of Taru is a large, spacious room with an attached walk in closet that is large enough to make a separate room by itself. In fact, I realised that it is as big as the smallest bedroom I have ever designed!

The clients loved the open, airy vibe of the room and wanted to keep it that way. They didn’t want it cluttered with unnecessary furniture at all. So we only put in the minimum required for comfort, and left the rest of the area open.

The Plan

You enter the master bedroom of Taru through a long passageway, which ensures complete privacy to the bedroom.

We could have placed the bed in the centre of the room, but thought it was a better idea to leave more space on the balcony end. The balcony itself is too narrow to hold any seating. But there is enough space to keep seating on the balcony end of the bedroom, if the bed is kept to one side of the room. This balcony also provides a beautiful uninterrupted view, similar to that from the living room balcony.

For now the clients wanted only one chair in the balcony corner, but we left space enough for them to add another whenever they feel the need. A chest of drawers near the chair gives additional storage and also doubles as a side table for the chair.

Master bedroom of Taru - plan

The bedroom leads into a large walk-in-wardrobe. We have full sized wardrobes along one wall, and slightly narrower storage units on the opposite side. Between the two sets of storages, a floor to ceiling mirror makes the dressing area.

Though quite minimal in plan, the colours and finishes make this room a stunner in its own way. Let’s take a look.

The Bed Wall

Though the bed is not in the centre of the room, we’ve placed furniture, lights and artwork symmetrically on both sides so that it looks well centred to its own space.

The most inconvenient part of the set up was the offset in the wall coming right in the centre of the bed. You can see the column edge running halfway down the headboard. There would have been a gap between the bed and wall on the left of that column line.

What we did, was to fill in that gap, in line with the wall on the right, up to headboard height. We fixed a chair rail moulding at the top end of this and painted the bottom half like a wainscoting across the entire length. On the right, the moulding is placed directly on the wall, while on the left it makes a little shelf behind the bed as it goes backwards towards the window.

We wanted to leave enough distance between the wall and the bed so the space does not look cramped. Space was never a constraint, so we used large bedside tables on both sides.

The Seating Corner

Opposite the bed, close to the window, we have a comfortable wing chair with a hand carved chest of drawers placed near it. The chest of drawers provide additional storage space in the room. Since the chair is close enough, and because the client didn’t want any extra furniture in here, the chest of drawers also works well as a side table.

You do need some table space near your seating area, to place your phone, glass of water, cup of tea or book. The chest of drawers is within easy reaching distance from the chair, so we could do away with an additional table here.

The Walk-in-Closet

As you enter the walk in closet, you are faced with a full wall of wardrobes, from floor to ceiling. There is more storage on the opposite side, with the space in between the two storages covered entirely by a mirror.

The storage opposite has external drawers, which make accessing make up and dressing essentials quite easy while standing in front of the mirror. The all white shutters keep the space looking light and also in tune with the white and blue of the master bedroom.

The pair of glass shutters breaks the monotony of the whites and is a handy place for keeping things you want within eye’s view.

Look and Feel

If Taru is inspired by various forms of nature on our planet, then the master bedroom of Taru symbolises the oceans.

The wainscoting is a rich, vivid blue that brings to mind the beauty and peace you’ll find at its depth.

The white side tables stand out dramatically against the blue, while the exquisite white and blue ceramic knobs tie in to it.

We used a delicate print on the headboard to offset the solid span of blue behind it. Lighter blue bedding softens the vibe of the room.

On the windows, we have shaded blue drapes with a white floral motif, and simple white sheers to contrast them.

The blue glass pendants have a leaf-like texture and I love how they fit into the natural theme of this bedroom. But my favourite part of this room is the artwork we’ve used below both the pendant lamps. They are simple colouring sheets filled in by the girls. We had them framed to match, and I can’t think of a better way to personalise a home.

On the opposite side, the white chest of drawers is beautifully hand-carved with a floral motif. The weathered finish once again fits in with our ocean vibe. Doesn’t the artwork above it also remind you of waves breaking on the shore?

And finally, the beautiful blue and white rug that holds all the various elements of the room together, and stands out magnificently against the dark floor.

Before and Afters

Let’s quickly go through some before and afters of the master bedroom of Taru to get a sense of how we used this large space.

The bed wall..

We placed the bed off-centre to leave more space for seating on the balcony side.

The seating corner…

Easily fits in this comfortable wing chair and the stunning chest of drawers next to it.

The walk-in-closet…

The large space has been completely utilised by placing rows of end-to-end wardrobes and a large mirror between them to make the dressing area.

I think when you pick blue as the predominant colour of a space, you’ve already won half the battle. Blue is such an easy and beautiful colour to work with. You can rarely go wrong with blue.

Yet, I think we’ve done blue quite differently here. We have created a textured, weathered, and yes… ‘natural’… aura to this bedroom. I love the relaxed, snug and enveloping vibe that it has made in this large space.
