Our next stop on this home tour is the Mother’s Room of Falak Azura. With full floor to ceiling windows along two sides, this is the largest and brightest room of the home. We designed it to make sure it has all mom needs for it to be her self contained haven.

This room has a fabulous bird’s eye view of the city no matter where you sit. It is a large sized room as it is, and the ample natural light flowing in automatically makes the space bright and cheerful.

We used both these strengths as best we could. The large room continues to feel spacious and airy as we have used minimal furniture. And the pretty shades of purple, her favourite colour, add a vibrant cheer to the space.

The Plan

There are times when I look at a blank room and think, ‘How in the world am I going to plan this one?‘ The girls’ room I shared with you last week was a great example of that.

And then there are those where I look at the space and I know exactly what’s going where. This room, especially with a single bed in it, was one such.

Mom’s requirements were clear and simple. A large single bed, a television, a swing… and a whole lot of storage. They fit in quite obviously into the spaces for them and the plan was easily finalised.

We also used the space behind the bedroom door for a bonus dressing area.

The Sleeping Area

Mom wanted to use her existing, large single bed that she has been used to for years. Though she will sleep on this length-wise, she will use it width wise to watch television.

We added an upholstered panel on the entire wall behind the bed. This gives her a cushioned back whenever she wants to lean against the wall and use the bed like a sofa.

The panel is 6″ deep, making a natural shelf on it’s upper edge. The shelf gives her space to keep her things along the entire length of the bed, no matter which end she is using.

There is a wide column in the corner between the two walls of full length windows. The television has been placed here, with a simple TV unit below it.

Mom was certain she wanted a swing in the room. We placed it in a way that she can use it both ways, to watch television and to sit back and watch the sun set over the city.

The Storage Areas

The end to end wardrobes fit right into the niche between the bedroom door on the right and the windows on the left. We even fit mom’s steel cupboard seamlessly into these wardrobes. The left-most wardrobe is only a bare shell inside, with the shutters enclosing the steel cupboard.

There was a ten inch gap between the bedroom door and the wall behind it. We decided to make the most of this too.

We enclosed this with mirror fronted shutters, with slim glass shelves behind them to make the dressing area for this room.

Look and Feel

Since her favourite colour is purple, we have used pretty shades of this colour across the mother’s room of Falak Azura.

We started with that vibrant rug which we had customised for us in a round shape. It sits perfectly under the swing and grounds it, giving it its own space in the room.

Add the deep purple headboard behind the bed and the colour tone for the room is set.

We used lighter shades of lavender, pink and blue across the other furnishings and accessories to keep with the colour scheme yet lighten up the entire space.

And so we have this pretty bedroom, which is obviously ‘purple’ as requested, yet not overwhelmingly monochromatic or monotonous.

Before and Afters

Here are a few before and afters of this beautiful makeover.

The facing window as you enter the room…

The wardrobes fit neatly into the niche beside it. A swing, a safe distance from the wardrobes, makes a great place to watch television or take in the breathtaking views of the city from the window.

The bed wall…

An upholstered panel on the entire bed wall makes the perfect backdrop to mom’s existing bed. It adds a comfortable back rest, a useful shelf to put things away and a great way to add colour to the room.

The narrow strip of wall in the corner between the windows…

Is just the right (and about the only) place to fit in the television.

The mother’s room of Falak Azura is a large, airy and cheerful space. With enough space for rest, recreation and all her storage requirements, it’s just the kind of self sufficient sanctuary that mom was looking for.

This delightful home tour is fast nearing its end. Coming up next, and last, are the beautiful bathrooms of this home. And I assure you, they make quite a story themselves! Remember to sign up here so you know as soon as I post them.

Until next time,
