A reader very recently requested me for a roundup of sofa-cum-beds. I so often go on a hunt for a good sofa-cum-bed myself, that I could completely relate to this request.

Why Use A Sofa-cum-Bed?

I find sofa-cum-beds especially useful while designing guest spaces in small apartments. We do need these for times we have people over. We want our loved ones to be comfortable when they visit us in our homes.

Yet, in a small apartment, we don’t have the luxury of assigning a separate space only for guests. It is more practical to create a space that can be useful to us every day, all year around, and also comfortable for guests the few days a year that they visit.

A sofa-cum-bed, more often than not, plays a vital role in being able to design such a space. And so I jumped at the opportunity to make a comprehensive list of good sofa-cum-beds with sources. I have a feeling this one is going to be my ready reckoner for a while to come too!

Sofa-cum-Bed Options

Let me first begin with a couple of sofa-cum beds that we have used in our projects.

The first is this light and simple pull-out day bed called Flekke.

We wanted this little girl’s bedroom to have ample open space for her to play. Yet we needed a double bed for times when her grandparents visit or she wants to sleep in with mommy. A pull-out day bed  was the perfect solution. It works as a single bed for most nights when she sleeps there by herself. And it can easily be pulled out as a double bed when required.

We had this lovely sofa cum bed with the cane arm detail custom made for us from here. This space is the family room cum guest room in this home. We needed comfortable seating to watch television on a daily basis, and also a comfortable bed to welcome house guests. This sofa-cum-bed worked beautifully for us here.

Next, let’s get down to those that I would be happy to use in home renovation projects to come. Please note, that I haven’t physically seen or used these myself.

Gronlid

The Gronlid is a two seater sofa that opens up into a full size bed. This is smaller than a queen size and would be a little tight for two people, but good to squeeze into a small space.

Vallentuna

The Vallentuna is a modular two seater sofa with two separate pieces that can be used separately or together. My fave part is the flexibility it offers in terms of how you can combine and use the two pieces.

You can separate them to make two comfortable single single sofas. Or keep them together to make a double seater, yet open only one bed at a time if required. You could open both together and make a queen size bed or put a table in between to make two single beds.

Ikili

The Ikili is a three-seater sofa that opens up into a queen size bed. The rope-back, the funky shape and the unique colour… I love every detail of this piece.

The Flip

The Flip is a three seater sofa that opens up into a large queen size bed. It’s timeless design means it’s not going to go out of style any time soon!

Pullout Sofa-cum-Bed

The simple, contemporary design of the pullout sofa-cum-bed will have it blending into most homes quite easily. Keep in mind that it opens out into a bed at floor level, which might make it difficult to use for the elderly.

Foliage Pull Out Bed

The Foliage is a three seater sofa that opens out into a queen size bed. It is available in three wood finishes and you can also order it in a custom size.

Berlin

The Berlin sofa-cum-bed is a two-seater sofa that opens out into a queen size bed. This one too opens out to make a bed at floor level and so would not be ideal if your visitors are usually your parents or other elderly family members.

Camden

The Camden sofa-cum-bed is a two seater sofa that opens out into a full size bed, which is smaller than a queen size.

Miley

The Miley sofa-cum-bed makes a great Chesterfield sofa by day and so can well be used in a formal living space too. It opens out into a queen size bed.

Saffron

The Saffron is a three seater sofa that opens up into a king size bed. The lovely carving and cane details would make this a perfect fit in a traditional Indian, bohemian or eclectic space.

Paidge

The Paidge sleeper sofa is a three-seater sofa that opens out into a queen size bed.

Day Beds

Another great option to a sofa-cum-bed is a day bed that opens out into a double bed. The day bed can be used as a single bed on a daily basis, like we saw in the girl’s room above. It also makes a great place for a quick afternoon nap. Whenever required, it can be pulled out into a double bed.

Andaman Pull Out Bed

The Andaman is wide enough to use as a single bed when required, and opens out into a queen size bed.

Fyresdal

The Fyresdal day bed opens out into a queen size bed. The light metal frame makes it easy on the eye and I’d easily use it in a kids or teen bedroom.

Corvis

Love the simplicity of this one. The Corvis day bed works well as a ‘diwan‘ and a single bed and it very easily opens out into a queen size double bed. Only con is that this one too becomes a bed only at floor level. I can see it being very useful in a children’s room, making it so easy to have sleepovers with friends.

Bacon Divan Cum Bed

The Bacon is another divan type day bed that easily flips open into a queen size bed. The advantage of this one over the one above is its height from the floor which makes it more comfortable to use.

Da Capo

The Da Capo is a full single bed sized day-bed which opens up into a king size bed. Light on the eye in spite of it’s large size, this one would be easy to use with most design styles.

Single Beds

Coming up next are sofas that open into a bed good for one person. These are great for small rooms where you need sufficient seating and yet a place to sleep at night. Also as an additional bed in kids rooms for the times they have friends over.

Jovi

The Jovi futon works wonderfully as casual, comfortable, seating which opens up into a single bed at floor level when required.

Finn

The Finn futon is slightly larger in size. At a width of four feet, it is almost a two seater sofa which opens up into a large size single bed.

Hover

The Hover sofa-cum-bed is a smart, stylish three seater sofa that opens up into a single bed.

Felicity

And finally, Felicity is another chic, three seater sofa that opens up into a large size single bed.

Sofa-cum-Bed Options and Where to Find Them

Which brings us to the end of the sofa-cum-bed roundup today.

Though I did find quite a few of different sizes and styles and at different price points, I do understand our reader’s problem. Considering the size of our city apartments, and how useful a good sofa-cum-bed can be, I thought we would have far more options available to us.

If it has to be used daily, a good sofa-cum-bed must be really easy to open and close, and as comfortable to sleep on as a regular bed. All said and done, I don’t think there are many that fit both these criteria, and so we end up using them in spaces where they don’t have to be used daily.. mostly for guests.

If they did fit both the criteria, I would happily use them as substitutes for a regular bed in many small bedrooms.

If any of you have used a good sofa-cum-bed that I have missed here, please write in and I will be really happy to update this list… as much for myself as for you guys.

Until next time,

Note: I have included a few sofa-cum-beds from Wooden Street here. Though I have not had a problem with their products, my experience with their delivery timelines is quite bad. Most of the deliveries have been extremely late with no updates from their team as to when the products will be delivered and almost no response to phone calls or messages. The reason I have yet included these is that they are value for money products at reasonable prices. Please order from them only if you are in no hurry whatsoever to receive your product.
