By now you know how much I love my rugs. And I get so, so many questions from so many of you asking me where I source all those pretty rugs from. So I was a little surprised at myself that I haven’t written this post already. But better late than never – here is our rug roundup 2020.

Rug Roundup 2020

Rug Roundup 2020

If you’ve been around this blog long enough, by now you know how important I think rugs are to any space.

Not only do they complete a room, for me that’s where the room begins. Because more often than not, I start building the colour scheme of the room from the rug. I’ve explained how I do that here, in this post on ‘How To Create A Colour Scheme For Your Room‘.

To me, rugs are different from, say, a piece of furniture.

We have a special relationship, rugs and I. They are my heroes and I centre my design around them. They, in turn, strut around proudly and show themselves off the best they can. And I like to think that together, we make magic!

So let me share all these beauties here today, in this rug roundup 2020.

Anatolia

I’m starting with this flat weave rug we used in this rental makeover. This room belongs to a little girl whose favourite colour was blue. I wanted to make sure I give her all the blue she wants, without making it look like a boy’s room.

This rug fit in here beautifully. A dark blue base means it won’t dirty easily. The simple geometric pattern was just right for a little one’s room. I loved the way the little triangles added pops of all kinds of colours. And though you can’t see it here, on both sides the rug ends in braided tassels… a nice girly touch, me thinks.

Mint Green Runner

We had a very narrow space at the foot of the bed in this bedroom. Since this is the first view of the room as you enter it, we wanted to place a runner here to add a softness to the space.

Try as we may, we couldn’t find a rug in our size and these colours, and so we decided to have it customised for us.

Weaver’s Hut did a fabulous job, getting the colours of this hand tufted rug just right to go with our peach and green bedroom.

Bamboo Silk Carpet

Next on our rug roundup 2020 is this pretty monochromatic rug. This room was all black and white, so I wanted to use a lot of pattern in here to compensate for the lack of colour. One look at this hand tufted bamboo silk carpet and I knew we had our piece.

The colours and pattern both hit the bull’s-eye in this space.

Pretty Pastel Rug

We needed an unusual combination of colours for this rug, because we picked our colours off the wallpaper here. A minty green, a soft yellow, a baby pink and that beautiful beige. Once again, we reached out to Weaver’s Hut to make this pretty hand tufted rug for us.

Multicolour Persian Carpet

This vibrant, multicolour floral beauty is one of the boldest rugs I’ve used last year. We went lighter with the fabrics of all the furniture that is placed around this rug because this has all the colour we’ll ever need for a room.

Beige Trellis Carpet

The role this rug plays in this living room is completely opposite to the one above. This monochromatic rug with a self trellis pattern gave a subtle backdrop to our tropical living room.

You can see how all the different natural textures stand out and shine while the hand tufted rug blends into the background here.

Kilim Dhurrie

Most of this little girl’s room was done in soft shades of pink and lavender. The only two things that added pops of colour to this room were the curtains and this rug. We chose a large size to cover almost the entire bedroom, so that our little girl could play without hesitation on the floor too.

This flat weave too was custom made for us in pink, grey and purple (though it looks black in this pic). I love the vibrancy it adds to the space without taking away from its pretty, pastel vibe.

Pink & Blue Rug

This was another rug we had to have custom made because I just couldn’t find one in a blue and pink as bright as these.

This hand tufted piece instantly brightens up our boho living room and allows us to add so many different blues and pinks to go with it.

Courtney Rug

I struggled with whether this teen room should have a rug or not. I didn’t want to cover that beautiful floor. Yet I love the warmth that a rug brings to space, not just under your feet, but also visually.

We finally went with this light, cotton printed rug for a few reasons. Firstly, the colours and simple pattern fit in well into this room. It’s small size means it doesn’t really cover up the beautiful floor. That it is light means it can easily be moved from one area of the room to the other, as and when required. Finally, it’s easy to fold and put away when the bed is opened up at night to sleep in.

Poeme Rug

This is the first time that I’ve used orange as the predominant colour in a room. I think it worked well because of the wooden floor here. Because even though this rug is a happy orange, it’s brightness gets toned down a whole lot because of the wooden floor on which it rests.

I love how this hand tufted rug adds a radiant dose of colour while yet subtly blending into the floor.

Tribe Rug

Plain grey wardrobes, a textured grey wall and grey stripes on the bedding and drapes. The only bit of pattern we have in this all grey room is on the rug and on the quilt.

The fine lined pattern on this cotton printed rug balances the bold shapes on the quilt quite well and help complete this room.

Let me wrap up our rug roundup 2020 with a few rugs from my own home.

Dakota

The pretty pattern and earthy colours of this handwoven kilim had my heart the first time I saw this rug.

It was just perfect for the golden, earthy glow of our foyer.

Dining Runner

This area between my living and dining space is pretty much no man’s land which I always thought looked bare and cold. I had been looking for a runner for it for the longest time, but couldn’t find my colours in this size and shape. And so I finally decided to have this hand tufted runner custom made.

Round Bar Rug

This hand tufted rug was another one I had to customise because there just aren’t enough options available in round rugs.

Rug Roundup - Our Favourites From Last Year

Our bar chairs looked like they were floating in the middle of nowhere before the rug. Because of the angular arrangement the chairs rarely lined up and would always be at odd angles to each other after our home was swept every day. The rug helps to ground them all together and is also a reference point to place them. The added bonus is that I now rarely find the chairs out of place.

Multicoloured Living Room Rug

And finally, on our rug roundup 2020, the latest addition to our home. This brilliant, multi coloured hand tufted beauty.

Rug Roundup - Our Favourites From Last Year

Most of our furniture fabrics are in neutrals, so we’ve always wanted a rug that will bring the colour into our living room. We had a red flat weave here which certainly added the pop of colour we wanted, but it restricted my options in adding cushions and throws. When everything in here was red, a couple of cushion covers in pink were jarring to the eyes.

This rug offers me far more flexibility and I’m enjoying my new found freedom to pick pieces I like, whatever colour they might be.

.

This brings us to the end of our rug roundup 2020. I hope you’ve loved each one of these beauties as much as I do. Which one is your favourite?

If you’re missing a few rugs in your home, I hope this inspires you to go look for the right one for you. I’ve already thought of a few more areas in our home missing the ‘right’ rug… so I’ll be off now, looking for them.

Until next time,

Hi! I loved all your pieces and this is really inspiring me to get few for my home. I have some durries already. I have a question about maintaining a carpet or a rug or a durry and upkeep – How do you decide on the material , how do we clean it ( for example , one of the rug above is just outside of the bathroom, am sure am gonna wipe my wetty smelly feet on that somedays:( ) , how come the furniture leg isnt damaging to the rug. I have so many question about keeping this clean – I hope you get my concern !
The only durrie I have is , out during winter since I really dont like cold floor ( even though pune is never so cold )

Hi Hira. Rugs do require basic maintenance, but then so do all the beautiful things in your home, isn’t it? I vacuum all my rugs once a week. Dhurries and hand-knotted carpets can be washed and hand-tufted carpets can be ‘dry cleaned’ when required. A professional carpet cleaner can help you with that.
