I’m back with a roundup of my favourite home decor accessory. Rugs are the one piece of furnishing that can completely transform a room. So I am very happy to share with you today all the beautiful rugs that have transformed all our beautiful spaces over the last one year. Here’s our Rug Roundup 2021.

Rug Roundup - Our Faves From Last Year

Rug Roundup 2021

As you can see from the sneak-peek above, we’ve used rugs of all types. We have soft, muted colours, bright bold designs, floral motifs, geometrics and some beautiful abstracts. Each rug enhances its space in its own special way. And whether taking pride of place in the centre of the room, or playing sidekick as a slim runner to one side, they all serve their purpose well. None of these rooms would be the same without these rugs.

So let’s get straight to celebrating each one of them in our rug roundup 2021.

Multicolor Suzani

I remember how the client wanted this living room to be full of colour… yet blue. I was wondering how we would make that work, until I saw this rug.

A dazzling motif in the most gorgeous burst of colours with that deep blue base as an added bonus. This rug gave us the perfect starting point for this living room.

Considering how bright the rug was, we went with lighter colours on the furniture. We added more pops of colour with the cushions and artwork, and the clients got just what they wanted. A cheerful, colourful living room, which is mostly blue.

Ikat Runner

A small bedroom with a storage bed going all the way to the floor leaves little space for a bedroom rug. Yet, I find nothing makes a bedroom as warm and inviting as a rug. And I would rather step off my bed on to a rug than a cold floor.

In this master bedroom we went with these light cotton runners on both sides of the bed. They add a cozy vibe without being bulky and heavy, and are easy enough to slide away when they get in the way. For instance, if you wanted to slide open the bottom drawer of the wardrobe.

Multicolor Tribal Carpet

Our colour scheme for this little girls room was a brilliant mix of pinks, oranges and greens. Finding a rug in these colours was next to impossible.

So I did the next best thing, which was to look for a pretty pattern for the room. We were looking for something fun and playful, without being childish. Something that our little girl could use from her toddler years to her teens without outgrowing it.

This tribal pattern was just right.

I then shared an image of the butterfly wallpaper with the vendor, and requested them to customise it in suitable colours for us.

They did a fabulous job with the rug and we couldn’t have asked for anything better for this room. The large size and soft, tufted finish made the perfect spot for our little girl to play, crawl and learn how to walk safely.

Hyrax

This was another small bedroom with no place to put a full sized rug. Here we decided to go for a runner along the foot of the bed.

Since everything else is this bedroom was almost all lavender, we decided to break the monotony with this happy medley of colours.

In spite of the myriad colours, I love how the rug still has a lavender undertone to it and fits perfectly into this bedroom.

Black Ariyona Carpet

Yes, you read that right. This gorgeous rug has been named the ‘Ariyona’ after us!

Just like with the Tribal carpet above, I fell in love with this rug pattern when I first saw it. Except it was in completely wrong colours for our living room. It had a beige base and we were looking to for a rug for a grey living room.

Rug Roundup - Our Faves From Last Year

Once again, we requested the vendor to make the same rug for us, but with a black base. I thought the black would make a striking contrast to the greys all around it. As for all the earthy oranges and yellows, we thought we’d use those colours in the cushions and accessories to bring all the greys alive.

As you can see below, the colours worked out perfectly, just as we had visualised them. And we weren’t the only ones thrilled with the rug. We are very proud that it is now available on the vendor website as the Black Ariyona Rug.

Senilia Dhurrie

This sunshine bedroom was all about yellows, but not the bright, fluorescent kind. We used earth tones here, with lots of texture and Indian prints and motifs. We wanted our rug to have the same warm, natural, grainy feel, rather than a refined vibe.

This dhurrie, with its earthy yellows and reds and a distressed, vintage finish, was an ideal match.

Evil Eye Dhurrie

Since we were using a day bed in the teen boy’s room, we had a large, open floor space in front of the bed. We decided to use a patterned rug on it to make the room more playful.

I love how the dhurrie ‘fills up’ the space in a fun and friendly way.

Timson

There is a large space between the sofa cum bed and the TV unit in this family room. We wanted a rug to fit the entire stretch to make this a cozy hangout space for the family.

But we could have the sofa cum bed being pulled open on the rug. The rug would have to be easy to fold away when opening the bed. Which is why we decided to go for a dhurrie over a carpet in this room.

The colours and textures of this charming dhurrie fit in well with the rest of our furnishings to give a casual and friendly vibe to this room.

Genesis

This mid century modern living room has a subtle and gentle vibe. Our rug had to have similar. We wanted a rug that would blend in smoothly with the white floors and soft colours of the space, yet hold together all our furniture pieces.

Rug Roundup - Our Faves From Last Year

What I love most is how the gentle curves of the pattern blend in with the curved legs of the coffee table, the back of the accent chair and the oval stem and shade of the exquisite table lamps.

Traverse

Though the bed does not go all the way down to the floor in this bedroom, it does have storage in it. We didn’t want a rug going under the bed here, because it would b near impossible to lift the bed to pull the rug out for cleaning.

Rug Roundup - Our Faves From Last Year

We went with a runner at the foot of the bed, because we also have a seating area with some easy chairs here. The rug helps make this a cozy nook in the bedroom.

Boras

This delicate rug in gentle shades of grey and gold has a light, self design on it. The wallpaper, headboard and artwork in the bedroom are quite bold, so we wanted a rug here that would blend into the background and allow the bold elements to take centerstage.

As you can see, this rug plays its part here so well.

Apexia

We used a superb balance of patterns and abstracts in the furnishings of this good looking blue bedroom.

Rug Roundup - Our Faves From Last Year

The bold geometric on the study chair was set off well by the abstract curtains behind it. And the shibori style wallpaper pattern was perfectly balanced by the gentle abstract of this rug.

Cleo

Next, on our rug roundup 2021, are the gentle rugs of ‘Noor

Everything about the seating corner of this family room is subtle and understated. We decided to keep the rug that way too.

Rug Roundup - Our Faves From Last Year

The beige rug goes well with the beige sofa fabric and adds a touch of geometric pattern to the textures of all the upholsteries. The varying textures of all these furnishings add interest even though there is monotony in colour.

Acar

With that intricately carved coffee table, the home office side of the above room was a little more detailed than the family room. Though we continued with the neutral colours, we decided to go a little bolder with the pattern for this, smaller rug.

Rug Roundup - Our Faves From Last Year

You can see how beautifully the delicate pattern of the rug goes with the intricate carvings. It’s a match made in heaven.

Revolution

Finally, we wrap up our rug roundup 2021 with this pretty piece. The blues of this rug are soft and soothing, yet bright and cheerful, all at once.

I love how this rug adds a bit of colour and cheer to all the serene blues and greys of the space.

.

And that is it. The last of our ravishing rugs from our rug roundup 2021. Though we have such a variety in terms of colours, patterns, designs and styles in all the rugs that we’ve used over the last year, they do have one thing in common. All the spaces they adorn would have been totally incomplete without them.

I’ve enjoyed selecting and using each one of them and truly love each and every one of these pieces. I still, more often than not, start with a rug when selecting the furnishings of any room. They are always the heroes of my stories.

I look forward, with excitement, to launch a new hero with every story I write.. and I already can’t wait to share the next lot with you.
